SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
Registration and Transition Area open at 6:30 am
YOU WILL BE TRANSITIONING FROM YOUR VEHICLES
Mandatory pre-race meeting at 7:45 am
Long course starts promptly at 8:00 am
Short course starts at 8:30 am

This race involves Mountain Biking, Trekking/Trail Running and Orienteering
using a single transition area.  There will be a long course consisting of 22-25k and a short course that will be 15-17k in length.

You will be given a pre-marked topographical map that you'll use to make your way to checkpoints scattered about the Usery Mountain Regional Park. You will also be plotting checkpoints at some point during the race.  If you are new to this, don't worry!  It's easy to learn and execute.  There are some great tutorials HERE.
The Greater Phoenix Orienteering Club also has some great beginner clinics and practice courses.  Check out their schedule HERE.

In addition, you will have to complete a couple "Mystery Events" along the way. What is a Mystery Event, you ask? They are team challenges in which you'll have to work together to strategize on how to best complete the task. Examples of past Mystery Events: blindfolded puzzles, plank walks, climbing walls, etc

We will have a transition area where you can stow your gear when not in use.  For example, you don't need to carry your helmet on the trek.  You will be looping back through the Transition Area.

MANDATORY GEAR PER PERSON:

  1. A hydration bladder or bottles capable of carrying at least 70 oz of water
  2. A bandana
  3. Pens/Pencils/Highlighters for marking your map
  4. A mountain bike and helmet
  5. UTM plotting tool (You can buy them at REI or for $5 HERE)
  6. First aid kit THAT INCLUDES TWEEZERS for whatever you may encounter during the race. Don't skimp!  It's your health! (One kit per team is ok)  There are a ton of cholla out there...we can't stress the need for tweezers enough!
  7. One gallon of water to be left with your gear in the transition area

RECOMMENDED GEAR:

  1. Waterproof map case or a large ziplock bag to keep your map dry
  2. Cell phone in case of emergency (MUST be turned off during the race)
  3. Gels, energy bars, electrolyte capsules for the trails
  4. Juice, Gatorade, bananas, salty snacks for the transition area
  5. Hat, sunblock

GPS units are not allowed.
If you are found using one, you will be disqualified.
